Now that Tom Barrack has been granted bail, there’s a lot of buzz on social media that he’s going to flee the country. Let’s be clear: that’s not going to happen. Barrack is a businessman with massive assets, and if he were to flee, those assets would be seized around much of the world. And if he got caught trying to flee, he’d rot in prison forever, and he’s not the type who’s willing to risk that. Besides, he’s being monitored by GPS. This isn’t a movie.

But Tom Barrack not being the type who’s willing to rot in prison is an important detail. The only reason he hasn’t cut a deal yet is that he thinks he and his high priced lawyers can beat the rap. But the Feds don’t bring criminal cases unless the evidence is so overwhelming that a conviction is very likely. So Barrack is betting wrong. If and when he figures that out, he’ll flip on Donald Trump and the entire Trump cartel in a heartbeat, if he’s offered immunity or near-immunity in return, which he will be.

So no, Tom Barrack isn’t going to flee the country and give up his entire life as he knows it, when he’s got a get out of jail free card in his back pocket. Maybe he’ll take his chances at trial first. Hopefully he’ll be just arrogant enough to get caught obstructing justice while he’s out on bail (which is the main reason to let him out on bail), because that’ll make it harder for him not to flip. In the meantime, Barrack hasn’t “gotten away” with anything – and the only way he will get away with it is if he helps make sure Donald Trump and others don’t get away with it.
