Ted Lieu comes out swinging

Now that the House is taking up legislation to make Washington DC a state, the reality is sinking in that there’s no legitimate reason not to make it a state. Its residents are U.S. citizens just like everyone else, so they deserve proper representation in the federal government.

But conservatives largely don’t want Washington DC (or Puerto Rico) to become a state, because most of the people living there are nonwhite, and of course nonwhite people are statistically more likely to vote Democrat than Republican. Conservatives don’t want to say that out loud, so instead they’re offering all kinds of nonsense rationales for why DC shouldn’t be a state.

Congressman Ted Lieu is having none of it:

That’s right, the Heritage Foundation is arguing with a straight face that Washington DC residents don’t need any representation in the House or Senate because they have yard signs instead. That’s not going to fly.
