When you lose a civil trial by summary judgment before it starts, and you show up late on day one and then mouth off to reporters in a way that makes you even more liable, can it get even worse? If you’re Rudy Giuliani, yes it can.

Giuliani is on trial due to the lies he spread about Georgia election workers. He’s since admitted in court filings that his election claims were false. But now Rudy says that when he takes the stand in the trial, he’s going to testify that his original election claims are true.

The judge isn’t taking too kindly to this notion, and informed Giuliani that he risks “perjuring himself” if he goes through with this kind of testimony. When you commit perjury in a civil trial between private parties, you don’t typically get criminally charged for it. But the judge and jury can use such perjury as a basis for even larger damages.

Given that Rudy Giuliani has already lost this trial, you have to wonder just how ugly it’s going to get for him if he keeps screwing up like this. His attorney is already suggesting to the judge that Rudy is too old and senile to understand what he’s doing. The judge doesn’t seem to be buying it. But you know you’re in trouble when you’re on trial and you’re making such bad decisions that your attorney has to paint you as senile as a last resort. And it’s still only day two of the trial.
