Jack Smith fires back at Donald Trump

After Jack Smith and the DOJ filed in court for a protective order against Donald Trump in his January 6th trial, Judge Chutkan gave Trump until 5pm eastern time today to file a response. Trump’s response predictably arrived at the last minute and read like a punchline. Now, just three hours later, Jack Smith is firing back at Trump.

Jack Smith has filed a reply accusing Trump and his lawyers of attempting to try the case “in the media rather than the courtroom.” You can read the full thing here, but what stands out is just how quickly it happened. Of course Smith (and the rest of us) already had a pretty good idea of what Trump’s response would look like before it was even filed, so it’s likely that Smith and his team already had much of it written beforehand.

In any case, Jack Smith is clearly looking to get this case to trial as quickly as possible. He didn’t even allow a single day to go by before filing his reply to Trump’s filing. This kind of prompt behavior allows the judge in the case to move things along just as quickly.
