There’s no more sure sign that a company is going under than when its key employees begin fleeing. When you see that same thing playing out in a political office, it means the people closest to the situation think the politician in question is toast. So it’s noteworthy that so many people are jumping off Donald Trump’s sinking ship today.

First we had Trump’s lawyer Ty Cobb, who had been helping to defend him in the Trump-Russia scandal, but resigned this morning. If Cobb were the only one fleeing today, it might have been difficult to call this a trend. But this afternoon it was revealed that Trump’s White House Counsel Don McGahn, who has been with him from the very start of the administration, is also preparing his exit. So now two lawyers, who were supposed to find a way to magically get Trump off the hook for his crimes, are clearing a path to the exit door on the same day. That’s not a coincidence.

There are also other signs today that Trump’s own people may be fleeing his sinking ship in other ways. Trump’s former adviser Michael Caputo finally testified for Robert Mueller today, after having previously tried to defy the Trump-Russia investigation in profane fashion. We don’t know just how much Caputo told Mueller, but it’s noteworthy that Caputo is now cooperating with Mueller on some level, meaning that Caputo is placing his bets on Mueller and not Trump.

As if to rub it in, Donald Trump’s financial backers the Mercers decided to bankrupt Cambridge Analytica today, opting to start over with their shady voter data analysis work under a new company name. In other words, they’ve decided to leave the “Cambridge Analytica” moniker behind so that Trump can be left stuck dealing with the fallout surrounding the firm’s antics. In a growing number of ways, the rats are fleeing Trump’s sinking ship today – and the day isn’t even quite yet over.
