Earlier today the news broke that Jack Smith subpoenaed Donald Trump’s Twitter account back in January and received access to it months ago. It’s not yet been reported precisely what Smith was after. Was he looking for metadata to prove that Trump was indeed the one who posted incriminating tweets to his account? Was Smith looking at private direct messages?

In any case, Trump isn’t taking the news well. He used his own social network, Truth Social, to post this explosively angry screed, claiming that the DOJ “secretly attacked my Twitter account, making it a point not to let me know about this major “hit” on my civil rights. My Political Opponent is going CRAZY trying to infringe on my Campaign for President. Nothing like this has ever happened before.”

Trump can whine all he likes, but his “opponent” Joe Biden had nothing to do with this. And this isn’t a civil rights violation, given that the legal system would have confirmed the subpoena was legal and warranted before signing off on it. And in spite of Trump’s claim, this kind of thing happens all the time. When prosecutors have probable cause that a social media account was used to commit a crime, subpoenas like this are routinely carried out.

Again, Jack Smith obtained access to Donald Trump’s Twitter account months ago. This only serves to underscore how far ahead of the game Smith is, and how powerless Trump is to do anything about it. At this point all Trump can do is whine about how badly he’s losing this battle.
