Donald Trump’s White House senior adviser Kellyanne Conway appears to have no job duties beyond occasionally going on television to embarrass herself, even as Saturday Night Live increasingly lampoons her ridiculous existence. But now she may have bigger things to worry about than irrelevance, or being the butt of widespread jokes. Congress and Special Counsel Robert Mueller are now investigating the trail of a Russian hacking conspirator with connections to Conway. Moreover, that conspirator is now dead.
Months ago, Republican operative Peter W. Smith admitted to the Wall Street Journal that he had attempted to conspire with Russian hackers and the Donald Trump campaign to rig the election in Trump’s favor. Smith died ten days later, in what has since been announced as a suicide. Now, according to a CNN report (link), Congress and Mueller are actively investigating Smith’s ties to the Trump campaign. Smith claimed to have connections with a number of Trump advisers, including Michael Flynn, Steve Bannon, and Kellyanne Conway. It turns out he did have connections to Conway.
Palmer Report reported all the way back on July 1st that Peter Smith had worked with Kellyanne Conway’s husband (link), thus establishing a clear link between them. Kellyanne has since gone on to admit that she did in fact know Smith. That’s a problem for her, because Smith had made clear that he intended to bring any Russian-hacked documents to the Trump campaign. He logically would have brought those documents to Kellyanne Conway. Even if he approached her with stolen materials, and she said no, she could still face legal trouble for not turning him in. That’s just the beginning of her troubles.
As has been pointed out by political analyst Ale Vaughn, the connections between Peter Smith and Kellyanne Conway may run far deeper than has been revealed to date (link). If the Mueller probe turns its attention to Conway, it could put her on the hot seat, which could prompt Trump to shove her out the White House door, as she already serves no purpose. Or as Vaughn puts it, “Start packing, Kellyanne.”
