It’s exceedingly difficult to get accurate news out of Russia these days, both because Vladimir Putin controls much of the media within his own country, and because Putin’s descent into bizarre behavior has opened the door for all kinds of rumors.

But three British tabloids have all reported that Putin supposedly went into cardiac arrest and had to be resuscitated. We were initially inclined to write this off as the British tabloids simply being what they are, but now Sky News Australia is also running with the story. So is it true?

There’s just no way to know. But here’s why it may be newsworthy either way. Either Putin suffered cardiac arrest and someone around him felt emboldened to leak it to the media, or anti-Putin forces have made a point of planting a false story about Putin suffering cardiac arrest. If it’s the latter, it could be a sign that anti-Putin forces are gearing up to attempt something. So this situation is worth watching right now one way or the other.
