When it was first reported that DOJ officials met with Donald Trump’s attorneys today, it was also reported that Merrick Garland was not in the meeting. This isn’t a surprise; he’s already made clear that this is Jack Smith’s case. So who was the meeting with? It had to have been Jack Smith’s team. But it turns out there was more to it.

Jack Smith himself was in the room for the meeting today, according to the New York Times. Why is this such a big deal? It makes abundantly clear that this wasn’t some preliminary meeting. This wasn’t the meeting before the meeting, with Smith’s subordinates. This was the meeting – the one where Trump’s lawyers were indeed informed (apparently by Jack Smith himself) that Trump is being indicted.

Over the weekend it was reported that Jack Smith is bringing his grand jury back into session this week. This, combined with the fact that Jack Smith personally met with Trump’s attorneys today to inform them Trump is being indicted, means we’re just a few days away from this indictment happening.
