This week the Associated Press casually mentioned, several paragraphs into a somewhat unrelated story, that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has subpoenaed email that Melania Trump exchanged with a Trump Organization executive. No real explanation is being given for this. So what’s really going on?

Let’s start with what we know. Bragg’s criminal probe into Donald Trump’s hush money payment to Stormy Daniels has been ongoing for quite some time, and Bragg already brought dozens of felony charges against Donald Trump months ago. Yet this is a recent subpoena. It means that on some level investigation is still ongoing.

This could mean that Bragg is still looking to bring additional charges in the case. Or this could be in response to Donald Trump’s recent attempt at getting the case moved to federal court. Trump is arguing that he made this payment in the commission of the federal office he held, so it’s a federal matter. It’s possible that the emails between Melania and the Trump Organization make clear that this was indeed a personal matter.

In any case there is no reason to take this as a sign that Melania Trump herself is in any legal trouble. At no point has she been named a target or subject in the Manhattan DA’s criminal probe. But it’s possible that her emails help further incriminate Donald Trump.
