If you were wondering how long it would take Donald Trump to figure out that the Atlantic is owned by Steve Jobs’ widow, it turns out the answer is three days. Trump spent the past 72 hours ranting generically about the Atlantic’s bombshell revelation that he thinks U.S. military personnel are “losers” and “suckers,” but now he’s aiming his rage directly at Laurene Powell Jobs.
Trump posted this deranged tweet this morning: “Steve Jobs would not be happy that his wife is wasting money he left her on a failing Radical Left Magazine that is run by a con man (Goldberg) and spews FAKE NEWS & HATE. Call her, write her, let her know how you feel!!!” To be clear, the sitting President of the United States is now making false accusations against a magazine owner, and explicitly urging people to harass her.
This tweet is disgusting, false, certainly sexist, and potentially antisemitic – but with Trump, that’s all just sadly par for the course. What’s surreal is that the Atlantic’s story has since been confirmed by the Associated Press, the Washington Post, CNN, and even Trump’s former favorite news outlet Fox News – and yet Trump is only focusing his ire on the Atlantic. This serves as a reminder of how Trump’s handlers and babysitters have insulated him from real news. He’s always days behind the story when it comes to his attacks and tantrums.
