The final polling averages say that today’s election for Governor of Virginia is likely to end up being very close – which means it’ll come down to turnout. This morning there was some cause for concern for the Democrats, because in-person turnout in the Democratic-leaning city of Charlottesville was down significantly compared to four years ago.

But as of this afternoon that trend has reversed, according to Dave Wasserman of the respected Cook Political Report. He tweeted that in-person voting in Charlottesville is now on track to “perhaps slightly exceed” that of four years ago, which he’s calling a “relief” for the Democrats. But there’s still a lot of work to be done today.

These numbers suggest that if Democrat Terry McAuliffe wins, it’ll indeed be by a very close margin. That means you, the people reading this article, can make a difference. Call or text anyone you know in Virginia whose politics lean in your general direction, and remind them to go out and vote right now. This will come down to the wire tonight, so this is one of those elections where every vote – and every effort to turn out the vote – will end up mattering.
