Did Roger Stone just signal that he knows he’s going down?

Yesterday, Roger Stone’s longtime associate and alleged Trump-Russia co-conspirator Jerome Corsi confirmed that he’s negotiating a plea deal with Special Counsel Robert Mueller. The only way for Corsi to get a deal is to, at the least, give up Stone – and everyone involved knows it. Stone’s response to the news is, shall we say, interesting.

Here’s what Roger Stone posted today on the only social media platform he has left, Instagram: “Taking the day off to play golf. Screw the New York Times and Washington Post!” He then included a photograph of Richard Nixon on a golf course, and we all know how things turned out for Nixon. So let’s talk about what’s going on here.

First, there’s the obvious question: why is Roger Stone attacking these two newspapers in particular? Sure, he hates them. But he routinely lashes out at every news outlet that covers his scandals, including Palmer Report. So why is he gunning for the Times and the Post today? This perhaps suggests that the two newspapers are racing each other to break a major new Stone scandal, and he’s been talking to them in the hope of steering the story in his favor, and he’s grown sick of it.

Second, we all know that Richard Nixon is Roger Stone’s lifelong hero. But now that Stone has his back so thoroughly against the wall that even Corsi is selling him out, why would he suddenly be evoking images of a guy like Nixon, who was famously taken down for conspiring to rig a presidential election? Is Roger Stone saying that he knows he’s going down, or is he signaling that he simply can’t handle the pressure anymore?
