Mitch McConnell gets pushed to the brink
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has been having an eventful past week to say the least. He threw a fit after getting dubbed “Moscow Mitch” over his refusal to allow a vote on election security. He fell and broke his shoulder. He posted a tweet depicting the “death” of his 2020 Democratic opponent Amy McGrath. He got into a fight with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and lost. Now Mitch has a whole different kind of drama.
Now that Mitch McConnell has made clear he’s not willing to make a move on gun control, protesters have begun making moves on him. More specifically, protesters have begun parking themselves outside McConnell’s various properties, in order to send him a clear message that they’re not okay with his refusal to do his job.
While McConnell was at his Kentucky home on Monday night, protesters camped out outside his home, making their voices heard loud and clear. Then on Tuesday night, a larger group of protesters from March For Our Lives held a vigil outside McConnell’s Senate office in Kentucky.
The upshot is that Mitch McConnell can expect continued pushback as long as he keeps refusing to do his job. The protests aren’t going away any time soon. More to the point, McConnell is facing a tough road to reelection in 2020 thanks to upstart Democratic challenger Amy McGrath – and she’ll certainly receive the support of those who have been protesting McConnell. At this point Mitch’s best move would be to simply resign.
