“Not a typo.” These words appeared as a chyron on MSNBC. They referred to Donald Trump’s audacious and utterly absurd request to delay his January 6 trial until the year 2026. And it’s a good thing MSNBC posted that chyron. Because a whole lot of people watching DID think it was a typo at first. This is because the request is utterly insane.

On Thursday evening, the Trump legal team, responding to Judge Chutkan’s request that they pick a date when they want the trial to start, chose April of — 20206?! Many could not believe the audacity. And MSNBC apparently knew it, which is why “Not a typo” appeared on the screen.

“I’ll eat my hat if Judge Chutkan agrees with Trump.” This is from Neal Katyal. Of course, Chutkan will not agree to this. And honestly? I’m a bit surprised Trump’s legal team didn’t suggest 2040. Anything’s possible with this legal team.

People on social media reacted with emotions ranging from shell-shocked to extremely amused. Democratic lawyer Marc Elias had this to say: “I continue to be amazed at the consistency of the bad strategy of Trump’s various legal teams.”

I’m not. Why? Because I suspect they requested this date on orders from their wayward client. This is merely my opinion, but it would make sense. If there’s a bad decision to make, rest assured Donald Trump will make it. Still, this was absurd even by Trump standards.

Trump is clearly terrified at the thought of going on trial. And he should be. Incarceration is not an easy life for ANYONE, but for someone who’s been surrounded by opulence their entire life, it’s bound to be harder than for the average Joe.

However, Chutkan will never allow this. She’s too much of a quality Judge to be taken in by utterly ridiculous requests like this. My guess is that this case, in particular, WILL go to trial WELL before the Presidential election whether individual one likes it or not.
