Here’s the thing Donald Trump doesn’t get: his base didn’t elect him President. No one ever gets elected President without the support of voters in the middle. Trump ignored the middle in 2016, then got lucky after the media and James Comey dishonestly told the voters in the middle that Hillary Clinton was going to prison for her emails. Trump learned the wrong lesson, and now he thinks the key to victory in 2020 is to focus even more egregiously on his deranged base. This brings us to Mike Pence.

Politically speaking, it’s the job of the running mate to serve as the campaign’s attack dog. But while Mike Pence was supposed to go a bit low during his speech on Wednesday night, he wasn’t supposed to go this low. The idiot actually said that people “won’t be safe in Joe Biden’s America.” Yes, Trump’s drooling base loves this crap. But this kind of rhetoric forces the voters in the middle to stop and examine what America currently looks like, and that’s a problem, because nearly everyone is currently having a bad go of it in Trump’s increasingly deadly and unsafe America.

Donald Trump surely loved Mike Pence’s speech, because Trump narcissistically thinks it’s all about firing up his own base. But that’s not how you win an election – particularly when you’re ten points down going into your own convention. Pence just made things even harder for Trump, whether Trump understands that or not.
