By all accounts the Department of Justice now has formal cooperation deals in place with three witnesses against Matt Gaetz – a clear sign that it intends to indict him with a substantial federal criminal case. Earlier this month we warned you that as we got closer to Gaetz’s inevitable indictment and arrest, he would merely act even more arrogantly. After all, at this point all he may have left in his life is the opportunity to screw with us on his way down.

Sure enough, during a House hearing today, Matt Gaetz claimed to be holding the contents of Hunter Biden’s laptop in his hand, and attempted to enter it into the congressional record. No really, this happened. No one really believes that Gaetz has anything incriminating against Hunter Biden in his possession, or else he and his party would be using it to create scandals in the media for Joe Biden. Instead Gaetz is reduced to pulling a stunt like this, where he knew that committee chair Jerry Nadler would shut him down.

Gaetz has been acting out in increasingly cartoonish and unhinged fashion for some time, but this is an escalation even by his standards. The question is why he’s now escalating his antics so severely. It’s worth keeping mind that his former associate Joel Greenberg was supposed to be sentenced in court today, but that sentencing was delayed yet again. Legal experts say this is a sign that Greenberg’s cooperation is continuing to pay off for law enforcement in ongoing and significant fashion, and Greenberg wants it all to play out first so he can get full credit for it when he’s sentenced.

In other words, the latest delay in Greenberg’s sentencing appears to be bad news for Matt Gaetz and the other people Greenberg flipped on. It might buy Gaetz some additional time before his indictment, but the apparently overwhelming success of Greenberg’s cooperation merely increases the odds that the case against him will be comprehensive enough to achieve a conviction at trial.

So did Matt Gaetz decide to act out like this today because it was supposed to have been Joel Greenberg’s sentencing date? Did he act out because Greenberg’s sentencing keeps getting delayed, and he knows how bad that is for him? Gaetz maintains his innocence, as is his right. But he must really be sweating what’s coming in that indictment.
