January 6th Committee drops a ton of bricks on Donald Trump

The House Select Committee wrapped up its public hearings (for now at least) about the January 6 insurrection, and all fingers pointed at Donald Trump. CNN quoted Liz Cheney: “The vast weight of evidence presented so far has shown us that central cause of January 6 was one man, Donald Trump, who many others followed.” As Cheney pointed out, the insurrection would never have happened without Trump. Had he not insisted on lying about how he lost the election and stirring people up, those people would never have thought about breaching and vandalizing the Capitol. The committee looked at Trump’s state of mind, intent, motivations, and how he used his rallying cries to get people riled up.

The committee could not have made its intent clearer when it indicated that it would vote to subpoena Donald Trump, and by the end of the hearing, they voted to do just that. As George Conway opined, Trump will never respond to the subpoena, and the committee doesn’t have the time necessary to enforce it; however, he’s got to be rattled. This is one in a long line of things coming at Trump head on. At some point, he’s going to break. If the committee had the time, they could absolutely compel Trump to comply. Trump seems to forget that he is just another citizen. He can no longer claim, nor will he be afforded, executive privilege. Conway supports his position by pointing to both the D.C. Circuit and Supreme Court allowing the National Archives to produce executive materials to the committee. In other words, this committee has more executive privilege than Trump.

Conway further pointed out that the committee has no intention of fighting Trump; they are merely baiting him to respond. Trump is very predictable, and you can bet some type of crass, classless response will be forthcoming. Every time he responds to something, he shoots himself in the foot, and this time will be no different. He won’t be able to help himself, especially after he got a kiss-off from the Supreme Court today.

SCOTUS showed Trump what they think of him and his never-ending circus in a one-sentence ruling on his appeal from the 11th Circuit: “The application to vacate the stay entered by the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit on September 21, 2022, presented to Justice Thomas and by him referred to the Court is DENIED.” Keep it moving, Trump. No one is listening to him, and it seems the only judge in his pocket is Cannon, who is apparently willing to risk everything she has worked for to support Trump. The district court will be the end of the road for her, and hopefully, this will be the end of the road for Trump.

Never in the history of this country has a so-called president been so hell-bent on destroying democracy as we know it. He refused to participate in the peaceful transfer of power as many presidents before him have done over the years. Trump showed who and what he is when he lost the election, and he continues to show who he is and what he cares about, which is Donald Trump.
