After Robert Mueller zoomed past Donald Trump’s “red line” yesterday and began using that red line to whack Trump’s close confidant Michael Cohen over the head, the pessimists within the Resistance were fearing the worst. Would Trump respond by firing Mueller that evening, or by launching a bunch of missiles into Syria by nightfall? As it turns out, none of the above. Trump has no plan for fighting back. He has no idea what’s going on. He’s not doing anything. He’s not even functioning.
Trump was completely blindsided by Mueller’s move against Michael Cohen. We have to admit that we didn’t see Mueller making such an aggressive move against Cohen so soon, but four days ago we did post an article titled “Robert Mueller has cornered Michael Cohen.” If we could see that Mueller was headed in Cohen’s direction based on publicly available clues, how did Trump not see it coming? He’s the one whose presidency, money, and freedom are on the line here. Yet he has no plan, no clue, no awareness, nothing.
What happens when Mueller makes his inevitable move against Trump’s lifelong friend Roger Stone? The clues have been strongly pointing in that direction for weeks. What if yesterday’s raid had been against Donald Trump Jr instead of Michael Cohen? The evening before the raid against Cohen, we know that Trump was wasting time watching a golf tournament on television, and tweeting about the results. This is where his focus is.
Donald Trump isn’t functioning. His response thus far to the Michael Cohen raid has been to bloviate hyperbolically to reporters and to whine about how unfair it all is. He probably proceeded to spend the rest of the day staring at Fox News, in the hope that one of his sycophants on there would tell him that he’s the real victim in his criminal scandals, and that it’s all going to magically be okay for him. Stay vigilant, but don’t give Trump more credit than he deserves by assuming that he has a coherent plan, or that he’s even functional at this point.
