For all the narratives about how Donald Trump’s people will never abandon him no matter what, Bill Barr, Mike Pompeo, Mick Mulvaney, Nikki Haley, Kayleigh McEnany, and Mark Esper might like a word. They don’t deserve any credit for turning against Trump so late. But they prove that, in the end, right wingers always selfishly sell each other out as needed. This brings us to Trump’s supposedly most loyal sidekick, Mark Meadows.

How badly do you have to screw up in life to get criminally indicted under the Espionage Act and still have no idea whether your loyal sidekick cut a cooperation deal as part of that indictment? You’re even worse off if it turns out you instructed your other sidekicks to try to investigate and determine whether or not your main sidekick has flipped on you. According to Rolling Stone, that’s precisely what Trump did to Meadows. By the way, it’s even worse if your secret plot to investigate your own sidekick somehow ends up in the hands of the media, thus giving prosecutors a chance to figure out if you committed even more crimes like witness intimidation in the process.

It’s tempting to ask why Trump is doing these kinds of things. The answer is that he’s as evil as ever, but he’s now just as senile as he is evil, and the result is this kind of incoherent stupidity. At this point the real question may not be so much why, as huh? You read these reports about Trump’s behavior these days – haplessly trying to investigate Meadows, sitting at home with a bathroom full of classified documents, going on Fox News and directly incriminating himself – and you think it’s got to be from The Onion. Then you realize Trump really is that far gone. He’s always been a bad imitation of a human, but now he’s a pale imitation of his former self.
