Alligators are pretty prevalent in the state of Florida. I’ve seen some. What faces they have! Even I, who rarely feel fear at any of our outdoor friends, feel a shiver sometimes when gazing into the eyes of the alligator. They are creepy, no doubt about it.

I thought of the alligator today when I heard of Donald Trump’s latest kerfuffle. Because Trump, in some ways, reminds me of the alligator. More on that shortly, but first: Like an alligator in a rancid swamp, Donald Trump has been bathing in the muck-filled putrid depths of Truth Social. And he is wasting no time in launching his poor, poor, pitiful act. Donald Trump posted a rant that seemed to be seeking sympathy.

In it, Trump talked about how his enemies want him to “die in prison” and that he is facing “100-year charges.” Donald Trump is wrong. If one adds up ALL the sentences at their highest, he COULD be looking at 400 years — not 100. Know your numbers, Mr. Trump! But I doubt Trump will get 400 years. Although never say never.

Still, Trump apparently knows he screwed up by confessing on Fox non-news. Hey–even foxes can get it right occasionally. So this is what likely prompted the Truth Social meltdown. But the meltdown — Trump’s meltdown tells us something.

Trump is starting to, at least a little bit, take these charges seriously. It seems a little brain power, maybe just a teaspoon’s worth has made it to donald trump’s mind, and it’s finally dawned on him that there’s no breaking free of THIS one. Between the confession on Fox and now this meltdown about dying in prison, Trump is finally — dare I say it? Dare I?

Scared. FINALLY! There are ways to see fear in someone. Going back to the alligator — it’s all in the eyes. Anyone who gazes upon the pupils of an alligator for very long would be forgiven for feeling a morbid creepiness come over them.

But Donald Trump’s eyes give it away too. Next time you see him on TV — next time you see him losing it and talking about something — look into his eyes. Eyes are the window to the soul. One can see everything in the eye. Some peoples’ eyes are fields of diamonds. Those are the people we like to be around.

But Donald Trump’s eyes are scary because there is no depth to them. I have looked, and I’ve seen — nothing. Nothing reflected back at me. No reflective humility, no sparkling of the soul. Nothing. His eyes are somewhat primitive and opaque. Nothing ever shows. Or at least nothing did show. But now they do contain bits of fear. It’s evident that Donald Trump is taking in the danger that his future holds. I can think of no political gift more delicious.
