Donald Trump’s criminal trial is becoming so absurdly over the top, you couldn’t come up with some of this stuff if you tried. Even the best satirical writers, for instance, didn’t think to joke about the prospect of notorious financial fraudster Rick Scott showing up outside the courtroom to defend Trump on financial fraud charges – but that somehow really did happen today.

You’d also think that, with Boris Epshteyn having just been criminally indicted in Arizona, Trump wouldn’t want him anywhere near this trial. Instead Trump has Epshteyn at his side today in court. And you’d think that, with Alina Habba now in potential trouble for helping Trump violate his gag order by proxy, she’d be lying low for a bit. Instead she’s right there with Trump as well today.

It’s just stunning, yet somehow not at all surprising, that Donald Trump is opting to surround himself with these folks during his criminal trial. When you’re trying to argue that you’re not a criminal, it’s more than odd to bring in other accused criminals as your pep rally team. Why doesn’t Trump just go all the way and have an Al Capone hologram join his legal team? We suppose there’s always tomorrow.
