Even before today, it was abundantly clear that Donald Trump was losing this criminal trial in a blowout and was headed toward conviction. But today things took another kind of turn for the worse for Trump when Stormy Daniels took the stand – and it prompted Trump’s attorneys into making en embarrassing panic move.

Stormy Daniels testified in detail today about her sexual encounter with Donald Trump. This was necessary in order to help make the jury understand that it really did happen. Trump is still claiming that he never slept with her, and his attorneys have been trying to argue that this was all an extortion racket.

While Daniels’ testimony about having sex with Trump was legally crucial, it was also just plain embarrassing for him. These are precisely the kinds of salacious details that Trump and his campaign were desperate to keep from becoming public during the 2016 election, and as of today those details out there.

The combination of damning legal testimony and damning scandal clearly left Trump and his attorneys in a panic, because when they came back from break, they asked for mistrial. Yes, a mistrial.

To be clear, this has zero chance of being granted. Nor is there any chance that this is going to help Trump on appeal. This is simply a panic move, either because an angry Trump demanded it, orb because his attorneys felt they had to show Trump that they were doing something.

Either way, in terms of the verdict, this trial is now basically over. You don’t start making hopeless mistrial requests this early on in a trial unless you know you’ve already lost. Trump is headed right for conviction. The only question at this point is what the sentence will be. But Trump is going to be found guilty. And we’re still only halfway through the prosecution’s case.
