This afternoon Majorie Taylor Greene introduced a motion to vacate the Speaker chair. This had no chance of succeeding, given that numerous House Democrats have already made clear that they’ll protect Mike Johnson after he helped make Ukraine aid happen. Accordingly, the entire House quickly shut Greene down.

Now that Greene has fallen flat on her face, Donald Trump is sort of hilariously trying to mop up the mess. He just made a social media post professing how much he loves Greene, but stating that now is not the time to try to vacate the chair.

The media and pundit class is largely framing this as Greene’s motion to vacate having failed because Trump didn’t want it to happen. But that makes no sense at all and doesn’t fit the facts. This motion to vacate was never going to work because Democrats were never going to let it work. Trump didn’t save Johnson today; the Democrats did.

If Trump had any control over what was going on in the House Republican caucus, he’d have kept Marjorie Taylor Green from introducing this embarrassing motion to vacate to begin with. In reality no one is controlling this Republican House. And that’s why it’ll be a Democratic House soon enough.
