Phantom of the Opera, if you’ve had the chance to see the play, likely sent shivers down your spine. It is a beautiful and haunting symmetry of magnificent music, drama, and beauty. And after so many years on broadway, sadly, it is shutting down. It happens to all the shows at some point or another. And Phantom is one of New York City’s longest-running shows Its beauty is almost indescribable. Why am I writing about Phantom of the Opera? Because of Donald Trump, of course.
I really do not like putting such beauty in the same sentence with such orange and blobby treachery. But Donald Trump is once again spreading lies, and it is essential to call them out.
While ranting and raving on Truth Social, Trump brought up the closing of Phantom of the Opera — and attributed said closing to President Joe Biden. “Even Phantom of the Opera is closing in the Biden era,” Trump shrieked. No really, he said this.
That is just laughable. There has been a noticeable softening in theater attendance since the start of Covid. Even Phantom’s producer Cameron Mackintosh out a statement saying, “all shows do finally close.”
While it is a pity that the show is closing, it had a VERY long run, and Trump’s blaming President Biden for this closing is just poppycock. Twitter seemed very amused by the whole thing. Here are some of the best responses:
“That’s right, folks. Joe Biden killed the Phantom.”
“Trump is very confused.”
“Trump should not be allowed to disrespect a work of art this way.”
“Trump – the eternal fool.”
“I’m cracking up.”
Show closings are inevitable but it stands to reason Trump would try to throw some blame Joe Biden’s way. Luckily for us, the only “music of the night” Trump will soon be hearing is the clanging shut of the doors to his prison cell.
