Once Chief Justice John Roberts decided that Donald Trump’s tax returns must be given to a New York grand jury, it ensured at least a 5-4 ruling in that direction. That meant the other four conservative Justices would be casting symbolic votes that were more about framing their own legacies.

To the surprise of no one, hyper-partisan scumbags Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito voted in Donald Trump’s favor, as they always do. That left Trump’s own appointees, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh. Gorsuch has spent the past month taking a page out of Roberts’ playbook of playing both sides, so as to ensure that future cases are tailor made to their personal whims, so it wasn’t surprising that Gorsuch voted against Trump. But then came Kavanaugh.

Back when the Supreme Court announced in December of 2019 that it was taking up this case, Donald Trump quickly began sucking up to Brett Kavanaugh on Twitter. At the time, Palmer Report took this as a sign that Trump feared Kavanaugh would end up voting against him. Why? If Trump loses, Kavanaugh faces felony perjury charges.

By voting against Donald Trump on his tax returns, and potentially hastening Trump’s downfall, Brett Kavanaugh seems to be trying to make the case that the next iteration of the DOJ should just leave him alone instead of using the perjury charges to pressure him to resign from the Supreme Court. We don’t think that’s going to work in Kavanaugh’s favor, but desperate men do desperate things. Kavanaugh just bet that Trump is going to lose in November, and he’s trying to figure out how to survive in a post-Trump landscape. When things get tough, it’s every criminal for himself.
