Another House Republican calls it quits

At this point the House Republican majority is so tiny that the insurrectionist House Republicans are very close to successfully ousting “Speaker” Mike Johnson. And if Republicans lose one or two more seats, they’ll lose the majority entirely.

Now it turns out they’re going to lose another seat – it’s just a matter of when. House Republican Jake LaTurner announced today that he’s retiring at the end of his term. On its own, this news doesn’t impact the majority. But we’ve been seeing a trend in which House Republicans announce they’re retiring at the end of the term, and then end up quitting before the end of the term.

So now we wait to see if LaTurner follows Ken Buck and others who have announced their retirement and then bolted early. Buck did warn everyone that more House Republicans were planning to follow him out the door. At some point a narrow majority becomes narrow enough to no longer be a majority.
