Kari Lake just stepped in it

When a car exploded at a U.S.-Canada checkpoint near Niagara Falls today, the only reasonable response was to wait for more information. Cars can explode for very different reasons, intentional or otherwise. Anyone who races into these situations with predetermined conclusions is a dummy asking for embarrassment. As it turns out, Kari Lake is that dummy.

Kari Lake immediately tweeted that “this looks like an attempted terror attack.” Actually she made a typo in “like” such that it started with a “k” and became a slur, but that’s a whole other story. She then insisted that this supposed terror attack was proof that the United States has “open borders.”

Everyone was quick to pile on. Even if this was some kind of terrorist attack – and law enforcement is now saying that it didn’t find any explosives in the car – the point is that the explosion took place at a border checkpoint. That’s the precise opposite of “open borders.”

Kari Lake is still, for some reason, running for U.S. Senate in Arizona in 2024, and she could end up being the Republican nominee. If so she’ll be up against Democratic candidate Ruben Gallego, in what could be a very tight race, given that statewide races in Arizona usually end up being very tight no matter who the candidates are. You can volunteer or donate to Ruben Gallego here.
