For Donald Trump, bad news is coming in threes
Rumor has it that an indictment against Donald Trump is imminent. His lawyers certainly believe it, or they would not have asked for a meeting with Attorney General Merrick Garland. Like a dead, old refrigerator, Trump is unable to keep anything. He published his attorneys’ letters on his Truth Social, whining that he is being “unfairly treated.” The funny thing about Donald Trump is that he could give a crap about anyone and how they are being treated unless it’s him. That is (a small) part of what made him such a lousy president.
In their letter to Garland, Trump’s attorneys also claim he is being treated unfairly: “Unlike President Biden, his son Hunter, and the Biden family, President Trump is being treated unfairly.” Let’s investigate that statement just a bit. First, how is President Biden being treated unfairly? He, too, has a special counsel investigating his retention of classified documents. Unlike Trump, they probably won’t find much. Those documents were found in a locked room in an office he used as vice president and some in his garage. It’s safe to say that he had long forgotten they were even there. Second, Hunter Biden has been under investigation for two years. Is it unfair that they have not yet found enough to charge him? No. He’s under investigation, just like Trump. Third, no one knows who they are referring to when they say: “the Biden family.” Is the entire family now up for investigation? No. They are just being ridiculous and grasping for straws. Apparently, that letter didn’t get very far since Rolling Stone reported that Trump’s lawyers have told him to get ready to be indicted.
Seemingly, Jack Smith is winding down his investigation, which points to an upcoming indictment. According to Rolling Stone, Trump’s attorneys call the investigation “bullshit” and that they expect him to be charged with obstruction. He did obstruct. They can call it whatever they want, but Trump had every opportunity to return what didn’t belong to him. Even as he publicly proclaimed that he had “the absolute right” to take and keep those documents, he didn’t believe that himself. Had he believed it, he wouldn’t have withheld them after NARA asked for their return, and he certainly wouldn’t have moved them after being subpoenaed. Anyone with half a brain can see that Trump’s behavior is a classic case of obstruction. He wanted to keep those documents, and he would have done anything to keep them.
Smith’s investigation does seem to be nearing its end. He has interviewed hundreds of witnesses, including some who were close to Donald Trump, with Trump’s former lawyer producing the most damning evidence. Even as Trump stews about the federal investigation, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis appears to be wrapping up her own investigation into Trump’s interference in the election in Georgia, yet Trump calls the investigations “election interference.” New York has already indicted him, and even as Trump campaigns for another run at the White House, he’d better be getting his proverbial ducks in a row to defend all the criminal charges he’s facing.
