As we await the results of the somewhat expanded, but still too limited, FBI investigation into Brett Kavanaugh, the Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee are throwing yet another tantrum in Kavanaugh’s defense – this time on Twitter. But it looks like they just screwed up and revealed something they shouldn’t have, and the Democrats are quickly calling them out for it.

Here’s what the Republicans posted to their official Senate Judiciary account on Twitter: “Nowhere in any of these six FBI reports, which the committee has reviewed on a bipartisan basis, was there ever a whiff of ANY issue – at all – related in any way to inappropriate sexual behavior or alcohol abuse.” This led Democratic Senator Dick Durbin to fire back: “This tweet is not accurate. Committee Republicans must correct it.” He then went on to expand upon this in a formal letter.

Here’s the key passage from the lengthy letter that Senator Durbin wrote about the tweet in question: “Each of us reviewed the confidential background investigation of Judge Kavanaugh before the hearing. While we are limited in what we can say about this background investigation in a public setting, we are compelled to state for the record that there is information in the second post that is not accurate.” Make no mistake here. Durbin is saying that one of Kavanaugh’s previous FBI background checks included descriptions of his “inappropriate sexual behavior or alcohol abuse.”

There is no way for us to determine whether Durbin is referring to “inappropriate sexual behavior” or “alcohol abuse” or both. But whatever the specific issue is, the FBI already found it and documented it long before this latest probe was ordered, and the Republican-controlled Senate has been keeping it a secret all this time. How much longer before Senate Democrats take the risk of simply leaking it? We’re getting much closer to the truth coming out.
