Chuck Grassley has lost the plot on Brett Kavanaugh

Now that multiple additional women have come forward about Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, and he’s even being accused of serial gang rape, certain Senate Republicans are predictably pushing as hard as ever to try to ram his nomination through. Then there’s Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, nominally in charge of the Kavanaugh committee hearings, who has clearly lost the plot.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who has bet everything on the Brett Kavanaugh nomination, took to the Senate floor this afternoon in a desperate attempt at swaying public opinion in Kavanaugh’s favor. Orrin Hatch and Lindsey Graham jumped on Twitter and aligned themselves as tightly as possible with Kavanaugh, all but begging history to remember them as monsters. But when Chuck Grassley hopped on Twitter, we’re pretty sure he was doing so while at a farm.

Even as his GOP Senate colleagues were swearing allegiance to the devil this afternoon, here’s what Grassley tweeted: “Wk 19 #cornwatch Pic 1- ears of corn to feed the squirrels in the winter Pic 2- evidence of deer feasting on abundant corn crop farmers do not get paid for sustaining the deer.” No, really. He’s tweeting about corn. And squirrels. This comes after he responded to Dr. Christine Blasey Ford a few days ago by tweeting about playing the trombone.

The trouble here is that while people like McConnell and Hatch essentially want to be seen as defiant monsters, Chuck Grassley seems to think of himself as being folksy and cute. That would be fine, if he weren’t a participant in one of the ugliest plots in the history of the United States Senate. If Grassley doesn’t want to take ownership of what his party is trying to do, he should put an immediate stop to it – or resign his committee chairmanship.
