Running out of allies and desperate for praise, Donald Trump took to Twitter this morning to thank Jerry Falwell Jr for having gone on Fox News and defended him. When a random follower chimed in to accuse the media of being “fake news,” Trump quote-retweeted that tweet as well. But as it turns out, there’s something bizarre about the particular follower whom Trump chose to retweet.

It all began when Trump tweeted “Jerry Falwell of Liberty University was fantastic on @foxandfriends. The Fake News should listen to what he had to say. Thanks Jerry!” That prompted someone named @Aroliso to reply with “Every single day the #FakeNews media try to take you down.. You never falter, you always stand strong!” Trump then quoted @Aroliso and added “Thank you, the very dishonest Fake News Media is out of control!” (link). But the catch is that the @Aroliso account deleted all of its tweets three days ago.

According to the Internet Archive, the @Aroliso account claimed in its bio over the weekend that it was “Starting over – 08/18/2017” (link). This points to all prior tweets having been deleted. And the Archive has no record of twitter.com/aroliso having existed at all prior to this weekend, which suggests that the account changed its username at the same time it deleted everything. Since the changeover, nearly every tweet posted to the account has been generic praise of Donald or Melania Trump.

So while a real person does appear to be behind this Twitter account, over the weekend that person deleted everything he or she had ever tweeted, changed his or her username, and began tweeting exclusively about Trump. Why do this? Why not just create a new account? Less than seventy-two hours later, Trump chose to retweet and quote this one particular account out of his thirty-six million followers. What are the odds that the one he chose was an account that had just finished disguising its true identity?
