After a record breaking Saturday, which saw him posting eighteen defensive and angry tweets about his failed handling of the Puerto Rico crisis, Donald Trump didn’t have the sense to quit while be was behind. When he woke up on Sunday morning, he began his ranting about the island anew. He hurled one of his most vicious insults at the Puerto Rican people to date, and faced widespread pushback for it.

Trump tweeted “We have done a great job with the almost impossible situation in Puerto Rico. Outside of the Fake News or politically motivated ingrates, people are now starting to recognize the amazing work that has been done by FEMA and our great Military. All buildings now inspected for safety. Thank you to the Governor of P.R. and to all of those who are working so closely with our First Responders. Fantastic job!” These words were nothing short of stunning, even by the low standards of the ill-tempered and increasingly out-of-control Trump.

Somewhere in there he referred to Puerto Ricans as “ingrates,” even though they’re United States citizens, and they therefore have a right to be upset at the inept response on the part of their President of the United States. Later, the Governor of Puerto Rico – who up to now had maintained a positive tone toward Trump in an apparent attempt at remaining on his good side, later confirmed on live national television that Trump’s above boasts were inaccurate.

This comes just one day after Donald Trump accused Puerto Ricans of being lazy, in what amounted to a thinly veiled racist attack on them for being minorities. Trump seems to have abandoned his earlier attacks on the Mayor of San Juan, in favor of a new strategy of demonizing all three-plus million U.S. citizens in Puerto Rico.
