Political polls get a bad rap in the accuracy department, due to the misleading and isolated manner in which the media usually reports them. The statistical reality is that when the final polls are averaged together, that average ends up being accurate within the margin of error the vast majority of the time. It was a big deal, and a nearly impossible one, that the publicly available 2016 election polls were so wrong. Now we’re learning that the internal polls, which tend to be more detailed and thus even more accurate, were off as well.

Yesterday, Politico published a lengthy piece revealing that Paul Ryan is telling friends he’s considering resigning from Congress. Buried more than twenty paragraphs into the piece, we find the stunning revelation that even the Republican Party’s own internal polling predicted that Donald Trump would get blown out and that the GOP would lose twenty seats in the House (link). Political parties are able to frame their polls based on their own detailed voter data, and thus tend to be highly accurate.

This tells us that not only were the internal RNC polls wrong about the presidential election, they were wrong across the board. As we learn more and more about how the Trump campaign conspired with Russian government hackers to influence the outcome of the election, it becomes more clear that the polls were wrong for a reason – and that reason is that they weren’t actually wrong. Instead, the Russian hackers went beyond merely stealing voter data and giving it to the Trump campaign. Those hackers must have changed the actual voting totals.

That notion may be instinctively difficult to believe for a lot of Americans, because it would require a cartoonish act of outright treason on the part of Trump and his goons. Yet we’re now seeing evidence that the Trump-Russia was very much was a treasonous conspiracy. There is no longer any reason to believe that the Russian hackers would have gone as far as they did all year, only to stop short of hacking the actual vote totals on election day. The Republican Party’s own internal polls tell us that Russia hacked the results of not only the 2016 presidential election, but the congressional races as well. No wonder the GOP is so scared of what the Trump-Russia investigation is turning up.
