Former FBI Director James Comey lives hours away from New York City. Yet he and his wife were seen spending three hours today at the New York Times building in Times Square. Even more oddly, the newspaper says Comey wasn’t there to visit with anyone at the newspaper. So what the heck is going on here?

The strange and potentially significant story comes by way of the Daily Mail (link), which managed to spot James Comey entering the New York Times building today and then leaving it three hours later. It’s difficult to imagine the New York Times would have lied about Comey having come in for a meeting, and yet he was clearly there for a lengthy meeting of some kind.

As is the case with a number of office buildings owned by major news outlets, the New York Times building does have other businesses operating within the tower. So perhaps Comey, who famously became recently unemployed, is shopping for a job. But the biggest tenant in the building is Dean and DeLuca, and it seems more than a bit unlikely that the former FBI Director is looking for a job with a grocery store chain. There is a tech startup in the building, but it seems too small. And he wouldn’t be likely to bring his spouse with him to a job interview anyway.

And yet James Comey and his wife traveled all the way to New York City to spend three hours in that building today. Are they perhaps looking to rent out office space to launch their own startup business? Is it possible that the New York Times simply got its wires crossed and mistakenly told the Daily Mail that it hadn’t met with Comey? Was it somehow a sensitive meeting that the Times had to lie about? One way or the other, this three hour tour wasn’t about nothing. Look for the other shoe to drop on this one.
