Even before the infamous Supreme Court leaked memo, polls suggested that the Democrats were gaining midterm momentum and were potentially on track to surpass the Republicans. Since the leak, multiple polls now show the Democrats five points ahead of the Republicans in the generic midterm ballot.

The bottom line: in spite of the conventional logic that says the opposition party always wins the midterms two years after a new President takes office, the polling says differently this time. That’s not a surprise, given how the Republicans are still tied to the toxically unpopular Donald Trump, and are on the wrong side of hot button issues including women’s rights and gun reform.

Take for instance the U.S. Senate race in Ohio, between Democratic candidate Tim Ryan and Republican candidate JD Vance. One new poll shows Ryan up by two points. Another new poll shows Vance slightly ahead. In other words, this is on track to be a very close race. And as every election cycle keeps reminding us, close races are decided by which side puts in more work.

That work starts now. By our count there are five Senate seats we can flip, and four Senate seats we must actively work to defend, in the 2022 midterms. One of the seats we can flip is Ohio. Now is the time to get to work for Tim Ryan. You can sign up here to volunteer for his campaign (in person or remotely from any state). Or you can donate to his campaign here.
