After Sidney Powell cut a cooperating plea deal in Fulton County on Thursday, Donald Trump spent Sunday insisting on social media that Powell had never been his attorney. Trump’s attempt at distancing himself from Powell – whom he previously identified as his attorney in various social media posts – was clumsy and obvious. But in the process, Trump may have given something away.

Right after Trump got done pretending that he barely knew Sidney Powell, he turned around and tacked on this rather lengthy and obsessive diatribe about Powell and Michael Flynn of all people: “Ms. Powell did a valiant job of representing a very unfairly treated and governmentally abused General Mike Flynn, but to no avail. His prosecution, despite the facts, was ruthless. He was an innocent man, much like many other innocent people who are being persecuted by this now Fascist government of ours, and I was honored to give him a Full Pardon!”

So why is Trump suddenly so obsessed with the connection between Powell and Flynn? Flynn was forced to testify to the Fulton County grand jury, but wasn’t indicted there. So Powell’s Fulton County deal seemingly wouldn’t impact him. But Powell is now definitely going to have to cut a deal with Jack Smith – and there’s every reason to think that Smith could potentially see Flynn as a target. But why is Trump so obsessed with this?

Is this an attempt at reminding Sidney Powell that she once represented Michael Flynn as a client, and is therefore limited in what testimony she can give about him? It’s almost as if Trump is more worried about protecting Flynn from Powell than he is about protecting himself from Powell. But then Trump always has treated Michael Flynn like a made man. Maybe it’ll finally come out now that people are flipping on each other.
