For quite some time now there have been state level grand jury criminal investigations into Donald Trump’s attempt to overthrow the 2020 election in Arizona and Michigan. But these probes have gotten very little national attention – until tonight.

This evening prosecutors in Arizona and Michigan had grand juries bring criminal indictments against numerous Trump world figures. The indictments in Michigan were generally lower level people whose names you don’t know. But Arizona decided to indict big names like Rudy Giuliani, Mark Meadows, Jenna Ellis, John Eastman, Boris Epshteyn, and Christina Bobb.

Notably absent from the Arizona list is Donald Trump, who is referred to as an unindicted co-conspirator in the indictment. What does this mean? It’s not clear yet. As I’ve long tried to explain, every state has its own set of laws when it comes to this kind of thing. For instance Trump was indicted on serious charges in Georgia because the state has strong RICO laws that make it easy for prosecutors to nail the “crime boss” who orchestrates a criminal plot but doesn’t get his hands dirty. In other states, where the laws are different, getting a conviction against Trump would be much harder.

So it’s possible that Arizona prosecutors simply concluded that Arizona law wasn’t going to let them get a conviction against Trump. But it’s also possible that Arizona indicted all these Trump world figures first, with the intention of getting some of them to flip on Trump, so he can be indicted and convicted as well.

We’ll see where this goes. But as things stand tonight, many of the biggest names in Trump world (Giuliani, Meadows, Ellis, etc) have now been criminally indicted for a second time, while some other big names in Trump world have now been indicted for the first time. Many of these people are going to prison. And so is Donald Trump.
