The notion that Donald Trump was going to magically get away with it all in Fulton County, simply because DA Fani Willis allegedly had a relationship with someone working on the case, has always felt laughable. It’s the kind of storyline where it’s easy for the media to generate a lot of doomsday hype. But no one ever did offer an actual explanation for how things were going to get from Point A to Point B.

Sure enough, there was a court hearing today to hear the defendants’ request to have Fani Willis removed from the case. The defendants’ attorneys tried to turn it into a spectacle. But Willis was seemingly able to use her testimony to shut the whole thing down. By the end of it, even the judge began showing annoyance at the total lack of a case that the defendants’ attorneys were putting on.

Even as this hearing was playing out, one TV pundit (and wannabe TV pundit) after another races to insist that the hearing went poorly for Fani Willis. One clown on MSNBC even predicted that Willis would definitely be removed from the case. But they all seemed to be commenting on a fictional version of the hearing that wasn’t taking place.

It’s now reasonable to expect that the judge will very probably deny the defendants’ request to remove Fani Willis, and that the trial will remain on track. And you’ll be so relieved to hear the good news, you’ll forget that so many talking heads intentionally tried to mislead you about where this was headed in order to drum up ratings.
