They’re SO CLOSE to getting it right

Over the past week or two, even some of Donald Trump’s own former attorneys have begun admitting that it’s over for him. Former Trump White House lawyer Ty Cobb predicted that Trump will go to prison. Even Trump’s former Attorney General Bill Barr said that Trump was in grave danger of going down in the classified documents probe. And yet the media is just not ready to admit it yet. They’re still too locked into the idea of milking “Trump 2024” for ratings, for as long as they can.

But still, I always look for signs that the media might finally be ready to admit that Trump is going to prison. It’s becoming a farce at this point. Major media outlets will admit in one breath that Trump is days from being indicted for espionage, and then turn around in the next breath and pretend he’ll instead be a viable 2024 candidate. This kind of alternate universe narrative can’t go on forever. They’ve got to be close to just admitting the truth by now, right?

That’s when I got excited when I saw that Vanity Fair – a publication that’s usually a bit ahead of the curve – published an article with this headline: “With Trump’s Presence Far From Assured, RNC Releases First Debate Guidelines.” This is the part where the media starts to admit that Trump isn’t really going to be viable in the 2024 election with espionage charges hanging around his neck, right? Wrong.

Instead the article merely centers on Trump’s threat to skip the early 2024 Republican primary debates – which of course Trump is only doing so that the media will go out and write stories about how he’s threatening to skip the early 2024 Republican primary debates. As usual, this is merely the media parroting whatever Trump gives the media to parrot.

Given that the first Republican primary debates are likely set to take place before Trump’s espionage trial, it’s possible (if he’s able to get out on bail) that he could indeed participate in the early debates. So it’s fine if the media wants to talk about that timeframe.

But as I scanned this same Vanity Fair article, I couldn’t find a single mention of the fact that Trump is about to be indicted for espionage – let alone the fact that he’s already been indicted for fraud in New York and already has a trial date set. You’d think in a ten paragraph article about the 2024 Republican primary race, most of which focused on one candidate, there would at least be passing mention that the candidate is awaiting criminal trial and is also going down for espionage. How does that not get at least a parenthetical mention?

But that’s just how it is right now. The (entire) mainstream media, left, right, and center, has decided to simply ignore Donald Trump’s criminal troubles while framing their 2024 coverage. And because election coverage is generally just made-up speculation this far in advance anyway, they get away with hyping the supposed “Republican frontrunner” while failing to acknowledge that the guy’s on his way to prison.

Still, if there’s one thing I always hold out hope for, it’s the hope that the media will find a way to be more honest with its narratives. At least now the media is talking about the possibility of Donald Trump and his phantom campaign not participating in the Republican debates. Just maybe it’s a step in the direction of the truth. We’ll see how much more honest the media is forced to become about 2024 once Trump’s espionage indictment comes down.
