Then there were three

Donald Trump (or whoever might be posting on his behalf) keeps complaining on social media that the hordes of Trump supporters who are showing up to his criminal trial each day are being forced to stage their protests far away from the courthouse. This is remarkable given that these protesters don’t exist.

Various reporters have been going around the courthouse grounds each day to count the number of pro-Trump protesters, and most of them have reported back that the number is roughly three. That’s right, three. Not three hundred. Not even three dozen. Three.

In other words Trump threw a party and no one showed up. He has now repeatedly insisted that “all hell” was going to break loose at his trial, a clear attempt at inciting his base to show up and do something stupid and/or illegal. But it’s simply not working. They’ve given up on him.

Sure, plenty of idiot Trump supporters will still vote for him if he manages to last until November. But even his biggest, most ardent supporters aren’t bothering to show up at his criminal trial. And it’s not just because they’ve watched so many other Trump supporters go to prison for January 6th. Trump is having a difficult time drawing a decent sized rally crowd these days as well. His base is just tired.

You’d be tired too if you had to spend the past three and a half years trying to remain excited about a political figure who has mostly tried to hide from public view and has come off as senile when he has surfaced, and whose biggest accomplishment in those three years was to get indicted on several dozen felonies.

Donald Trump’s supporters are as tired as he is. It’s fitting that he’s now literally falling asleep during his trial, because his base is figuratively asleep on him. He’s in the process of going down, and they’re simply staying home.
