The latest reminder that Donald Trump isn’t really running for anything

Donald Trump continues to do the bare minimum as a “candidate” – only holding occasional rallies and giving very few speeches. Furthermore, his speeches these days aren’t even in locales that can help his 2024 “campaign.” New Jersey? Minnesota? Come on. Trump is getting zero electoral votes from these states no matter how much time he spends there.

It all serves to raise questions about why Trump’s babysitters have him doing events in these places. The answer, it seems, is that Trump isn’t actually running for anything. We’re talking about a senile candidate who’s on his way to prison and is too toxically popular to compete in anything. His “campaign” isn’t about trying to win. It’s about trying to make money along the way, in order to fund his criminal defense.

It explains why Trump is now taking a gun control position that’s only supported by something like 12% of the population. This isn’t the kind of position that you take if you’re trying to get votes, even from Republicans. It’s a position that you take if you’re trying to make the NRA happy, without regard for how unpopular it is. And of course the only reason to try to make the NRA happy, at the expense of getting actual votes, is money.

Each time we see Donald Trump doing something utterly bizarre with regard to his 2024 campaign, whether it’s campaigning in states that aren’t competitive, or taking highly unpopular positions that one funding group happens to like, let’s remember why he’s doing it. It’s not that Trump has some secret evil genius plan to win by making strange moves. It’s that the strange moves are about making money during his lifeless campaign, and nothing more.
