The great Republican meltdown

What is happening right now is something to marvel at. This, of course, has to do with the band of cry babies — the GOP. On Saturday night, the White House Correspondents’ Dinner took place. It went wonderfully. Biden spoke, and he was witty and also eloquent.

It sort of felt — to this writer — like a homecoming of sorts — the first steps in the return of normalcy. We still have a way to go, of course, but it was wonderful to see this great event honoring journalists far and wide.

Trevor Noah was the comedian who spoke, and he was terrific. Nobody was off the hook. Noah did not leave anybody unscathed, and many people laughed until they cried — nobody appeared to be laughing harder than President Biden, who took it all in amused stride.

Yet there is one group of people who were not laughing. They appeared sullen and irritated. Need you really need to ask who that group might be? It’s the original joy stealers, of course! The miserable old party can’t seem to take a joke — unless that joke’s on somebody else.

One of President Biden’s lines was the following: “This is the first time the president attended this dinner in six years. It’s understandable; we had a horrible plague followed by two years of Covid,” Biden joked.

Faster than one could say “oversensitive,” the Republican National Committee had a melt-down. “Joe Biden just called President Trump a horrible plague” the RNC wailed on Twitter. “Reminder: Biden ran on uniting the country.” I think someone needs to do a bit of a happiness intervention with the GOP.

Republican National Committee — this is a comedian. He is doing his job, unlike most politicians in the Republican Party. Republicans — you’re supposed to laugh. LAUGH, Republicans. Do you remember what that is?

It’s what fake news hosts on Fox do about fake stories about Hunter Biden. It’s what Twitter users do every time Ted Cruz tweets something. In other words, you sullen group — learn how to take a joke. Just say yes to smiley faces.

Perhaps then you’ll stop accusing Mickey Mouse and other cartoon characters of bizarre and indescribable things. The Democrats knew how to laugh though! It was a fantastic night where most people — most — did not leave their laughter at the door and a good time was had.
