The big opening in the 2024 election
I’d like to talk about why we’re going to win in 2024 if we put the work in. If one stops and thinks it over, one can see that the Democratic party is where the bulk of the American people are politically.
Think about it. Most, if not all, of our issues are tremendously popular. The GOP doesn’t HAVE any issues — I can’t think of one — that are popular with the American people.
You might think: OK, so why do so many still vote for Republicans? This is because many low-information voters — voters who don’t follow the news daily — do not even know about many of our accomplishments and beliefs. It’s up to us to tell them.
Let me cite a few examples of issues important to the American people AND important to us — the Democratic party.
I’ll start with the minimum wage. Increasing the minimum wage is a very popular thing among most people. That’s because, in many states, the minimum wage is quite low.And the FEDERAL minimum wage is $7.25 per hour. It’s a travesty.
And, of course, we have abortion. You know who’s on the right side of THAT issue (us.) Time and again, the American people have shown that they do not WANT any type of abortion ban. They have shown this in polls and in voting. Time and again, republicans have shown they really don’t give a hoot WHAT the American people want in this regard.
OK — Let’s look at Social Security and Medicare. We want to preserve it. Republicans want to tinker with it. Some Republicans want to get rid of it altogether. In fact, several Republicans now running in the GOP presidential primary have SAID this.
Obviously, the American people are with us on this issue as well. It would be insane to get rid of such vital programs, but nobody ever said the GOP was sane.
Gun Safety. Some polls show that support for some types of gun reform, like background checks, is in the nineties! I think that’s more than enough support. But the GOP, held tightly in hand by gun lobbyists, will NEVER do anything to help our children be safe in their schools.
Healthcare. The GOP wants to get rid of Obamacare. We know this. They’ve said this. So where’s THEIR plan? They’ve been bragging about getting one together for years now but never have. That’s because the Republicans have no idea what they’re doing on healthcare as they have no idea what they’re doing on much of anything.
Climate change. Most people believe in it. Most people recognize how serious it is. At least if you’re not a Republican, you do. Many Republicans don’t even BELIEVE in climate change.
Black and brown Americans. President Biden made Juneteenth a national holiday. He works every day to show his love for ALL people.
But Republicans like Ron DeSantis wants to alter history. They don’t want our children reading about history unless it’s WHITE history. And most Americans disagree.
There are lots more issues I could mention. The point is — Republicans are abnormal. They’re out of step with the rest of America. Let’s SHOW the American people this, and let’s win.
