Third-party candidates. They’re everywhere is history. Sometimes they’re the bane of a political party’s existence. Sometimes they come forward into the night, saving another party’s hopes and dreams and turning them into winners.

So what will happen, friends and readers in 2024? Will there perhaps be a third-party candidate on the Republican side? And if so, who will it be? There has been much talk of this. And one — or possibly even more than one — can emerge. Let’s look over who is being talked about in this way.

Let’s start with John Bolton. That may seem a funny place to start but believe me, it is not. Bolton hates trump and has already said he’d run to block him. And I think Bolton would do it purely to stop Donald trump.

That’s the problem. Trump will NOT be the nominee. And Bolton is unlikely to run if it is anyone other than Trump. I doubt we will see a Bolton candidacy, although who knows?

Moving on, we come to Liz Cheney. The former congresswoman is said to be mulling it over. Cheney cannot win. And she has no political home. Were she to run, it would be as an independent.

And unlike with Bolton, Cheney has been firm in that she does not want ANY election denier on the Republican ticket. Will she do it? Who can say. There is a strong chance that she will. This is no shrinking violet; she’s made of steel. She would have little fear.

Mitt Romney is warning of the danger of a Trump presidency. And he is said to be mulling over a candidacy. There is a problem, though.

If Romney runs, he will likely do it on the GOP ticket. He isn’t courageous enough to do it any other way, and I do not say that snarkily. I’d like it if he were. But Romney seems to have limits. He goes to the edge but not further. And he’d have to go a lot further to run independently. He’d have to put it all on the line, and I do not see him as having the motivation to do that.

But we have yet to speak about the most likely third-party candidate — this is someone I think will run as a third party candidate. They will be the thorn in the side of the GOP.

That person is Donald John Trump. Trump will never endorse another Republican. And whether indicted, in jail, or at home, trump will bring them down with him. Yes, I see a third-party candidacy, even if it’s only from truth social. And he has the potential to take a lot of votes from other Republicans. We shall see, won’t we?
