Donald Trump is now bragging that he’s raised as much as ten million dollars in 2024 “campaign” contributions since his latest arrest and mugshot. Whenever Trump makes a claim like this, it should always be assumed that he’s probably grossly exaggerating things. But even if he’s telling the truth for once, it’s still not impressive.

For one thing, in the most recent quarter, President Joe Biden’s raised about twice as much money for 2024 as Donald Trump did. So even with the periodic mini-spikes that Trump sees each time he’s arrested, it still doesn’t add up to much. For being the supposed “frontrunner” of his party, his fundraising is actually rather pathetic.

Furthermore, $10 million is a mere drop in the bucket compared to, say, the $250 million that New York Attorney General Letitia James is seeking to extract from the Trump Organization. Even if Trump is really making $10 million per arrest – and again, Trump is almost always exaggerating or lying – he’d still need to get arrested another twenty times just to raise enough money to pay off what he’s about to owe the state of New York. That’s before getting to paying for his lawyers’ fees, servicing his debts, and spending just enough to con his supporters into thinking that his 2024 “campaign” is a real thing.

So no, Donald Trump isn’t somehow coming out ahead financially as a result of his arrests and indictments. This is a guy who’s cobbled together a fake political campaign as an excuse to fundraise money and use it to cover his legal expenses, and it’s not even going to be enough to cover that. So when you see the headlines about Trump raising this or that amount of money as a result of his latest legal setback, keep in mind that in context, it’s not impressive at all – and it’s certainly not going to save him.
