Whenever something goes wrong for Donald Trump, he’ll generally pick one of his official or unofficial surrogates to go out there and stir up some kind of trouble – either in the name of defending him, or simply to create a distraction. That’s usually when you see that surrogate’s name trending on Twitter for having said something ignorant or preposterous or stupid. Today was quite a different story.

At one point on Friday evening, the names of Kellyanne Conway, Nikki Haley, Liz Cheney, and Steve Bannon were all simultaneously trending. It wasn’t just that they were all saying stupid things. It’s that none of it even made sense. Haley, who was acting as a de facto Trump surrogate in his racism scandal as recently as three days ago, decided to publicly tell him off today, tweeting “This is so unnecessary.” Kellyanne then told off Haley, tweeting “THIS is so unnecessary.”

That’s right, these people are still in junior high school or something. But that was only the half of it. Congresswoman Liz Cheney, who is joined at the hip with Trump politically, decided to try to pick a random fight with Elizabeth Warren. That went sideways so quickly, Warren’s opponent Bernie Sanders jumped in to defend Warren against Cheney’s attacks. Sanders ended up slamming Dick Cheney in the process, and the whole thing was on the verge of turning into a televised wrestling match.

That’s when Steve Bannon, the former senior Trump political adviser who has since basically had his life ruined by his falling-out with Donald Trump, decided to go on television and praise Trump. This prompted Trump to refer to Bannon as “one of my best pupils” while still trying to downplay whatever role Bannon played in helping Trump get elected.

It’s as if Donald Trump concluded he’s in so much trouble right now, he tried to activate all his current and former surrogates at once, and instead they all ended up head butting each other on the way out of the gate. Things are too chaotic right now to parse what’s ratting Donald Trump the most, but whatever it is, he and Team Trump are falling apart in real time.
