Former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman to ever hold the position, announced the sad news today that she’s suffering from dementia. Tributes have been pouring in from all over the place, as expected. The trouble: GOP Senator Susan Collins decided that she had something to say about the matter. It didn’t go over particularly well.

Collins recently cast the deciding vote to put Brett Kavanaugh, who has been accused of serial sexual assault, and who doesn’t believe in the basic legal rights of women, on the Supreme Court. After she gave a deranged and divisive speech in support of her vote, and a few ugly followup interviews on television, she disappeared for a bit – but now she seems to think she can return to public discourse as if the Kavanaugh thing never happened.

Susan Collins posted this tweet today: “Sandra Day O’Connor exemplifies excellence in public service, & she continues to be a role model to women & an inspiration to young people. I am saddened to hear of my friend’s diagnosis, but not surprised she is facing it with the strength & bravery that have defined her life.” That would be a fantastic tribute, if it weren’t coming from Susan Collins. The responses were less than charitable.

One respondent said “Funny you should say this, Senator Collins. She exemplifies everything YOU ARE NOT!” Another said “Sandra is a leader for All women. You, are a sellout who will be voted out in 2020”. These were typical of the hundreds of responses, with only a small handful of people defending Collins. She seems to think the public will forget her Brett Kavanaugh vote – but it’s clear that the public is already gearing up to vote her out.
