Narcissism is what fuels the GOP. It’s alive and awake. clinging to them, manifesting itself in their every move. In Mythology, Narcissus was a beautiful youth who could love nothing or nobody except his own image, which he feasted on hungrily, as it so appeared in a small body of water beside him. He died as he lived — staring at the face reflected back at him, encompassed by narcissism. It is not much different from the GOP.

MSNBC’s Ari Melber had on his show Andrew Neiderman, the writer of the outstanding story “Devil’s Advocate.” They spoke about just this topic. It was a fascinating discussion, and Neiderman said in his opinion, “good” and evil” had been replaced by “winning and losing.”

It’s true, I believe. The GOP is so caught up in winning that nothing else matters A good example of this type of poisonous thinking is Steve Bannon. Bannon went a bit nuts on his podcast and declared Maga would “take power” this year. He also said Attorney General Merrick Garland will be “going to jail.”

This strikes me as pathetic but also almost comical. And it underscores Bannon’s narcissism. “The FBI is a Gestapo” Bannon roared. “Merrick Garland, you’re going to prison, Brother,” Bannon snarled. Now, why would Bannon do this? He himself is going to prison. It is not a wise move to threaten the Justice Department like this.

It is as Neiderman said. The whole point with Devil’s Advocate, he explained, is that the power of evil did not come from the Devil doing bad things — it came from the evils the Devil made OTHER PEOPLE do, and we’re seeing that for ourselves, are we not?

I don’t think many of these people do and say this stuff for money. I think it is for attention — for winning — for soothing of their own whirling, insane, narcissistic egos. If Steve Bannon were to stare intensely at his reflection like the youth Narcissus, did what would he see?

He’d see someone without ANY power — hardened face, eyes of rage and failure, unable to control the events around him. He would see narcissism. And he’d see a thirst to win at all costs. Narcissism and winning are what fuel the GOP. These things will also be their complete undoing.
