The worse things get this month for Donald Trump, from his worsening scandals to his worsening poll numbers to the increasing number of former apologists who are now publicly attacking him, the more Trump seems to recede into pure delusion. Even as Trump went on a semi-coherent bender this morning, the internet fought back with a Trump narrative of its own.

Donald Trump spent the day pretending that his poll numbers are higher than they really are, and pretending that the crowd size at his recent rally was larger than it really was. Somewhere in there he decided to attack his former adviser Anthony Scaramucci for at least the third time in the past week. Trump tweeted that before Scaramucci joined up with Trump, he “was with other candidates in the primary who got shellaced.”

That’s right, “shellaced” is now a thing, alongside “covfefe” and “Nambia” and “Ttump.” He ended up deleting the tweet and replacing it with “shellacked” but by that time the damage had been done. Even as this idiocy was playing out, the hashtag #TrumpAcronyms was also playing out on Twitter, as everyone piled on with the most insulting things they could think of that the letters “T-R-U-M-P” might stand for.

The point of course is that not only is Donald Trump more of a punchline than ever, he’s more delusional about it than ever. Trump seems to think that the key to turning around his current freefall is to pretend that his poll numbers aren’t dropping, pretend that the economy isn’t falling apart, and pretend that those empty seats at his rally don’t exist. That’s not a recipe for winning.
